NEWS24.CO.ID -  Nearly 19-hour flights between Singapore and New York will be the longest non-stop flight routes in the world. Qatar Airways previously held the record for the Doha-Auckland route.

Singapore Airlines was ready to reclaim the crown for the world's longest non-stop commercial flight when flight SQ22 took off for New York from Singapore Thursday night, October 11 2018.

The airline relaunched the service after a five-year hiatus because of high fuel prices that made the route unprofitable.

The flight route of 16,700 kilometers between Singapore and New York will take less than 19 hours, surpassing the previous long-haul flight record.

Qatar Airways holds the current record for the longest non-stop flight in the world - a 17-hour 40-minute flight from Doha to Auckland. Qantas Airlines also launched a 17-hour non-stop service between Perth and London - a distance of nearly 15,000 kilometers - earlier this year.

Singapore Airlines will use the Airbus A350-900ULR on the marathon route. Airbus said the aircraft, which is capable of flying more than 20 hours non-stop, was designed to use less fuel.

The aircraft also offers a spacious "elegant" interior design, a ceiling that is higher than normal and a wider seat that aims to reduce jet lag.
